ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI SEMINARY, FARANGIPET

Church of St. Francis of Assisi (Portuguese: Igreja de São Francisco de Assis, Farangipet) is a Roman Catholic Church situated at Farangipet in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, India. It was built by the Portuguese in 1568 and was then part of the erstwhile South Canara district. It received mention by the Italian traveller Pietro Della Valle, who visited Mangalore in 1623.

In 1568, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Mangalore (Our Lady of the Rosary of Mangalore) was erected by the Portuguese at Bolar in Mangalore. The Churches of Nossa Senhora de Mercês de Velala (Our Lady of Mercy of Ullal) and São Francisco de Assis (St. Francis of Assisi) at Farangipet were also erected by the Portuguese during the same time in South Canara. Farangipet is home to an ancient Catholic outpost which, at various times, has been, and still is, a church, friary, monastery and seminary. Located on top of a hillock, on the north bank of Netravati River, the official name of the place is Monte Mariano - Mount of Mary. The Monti Fest derives its name, with a little corruption, from Monte. It was here that a Goan secular priest, Fr Joachim Miranda, started this annual new corn feast to coincide with the feast of Nativity. But, Catholics generally are unfamiliar with the Monte Mariano name and call the place Covent ( convent ). They cannot be faulted because even the RTC, based on ancient land records, notes the owner of the plot as Montu Mary Cuvent Devaru.  More...
